What Joann Fabric and Crafts Closing Means for Young Designers

In January 2025, Joann Fabrics and Crafts filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the second time in less than a year, following its initial filing in March 2024. NPR reported that after its filling, Joann is closing all 800 stores throughout 49 states in the United States. This decision devastates customers, especially those outside major cities, who relied on Joann for crafting supplies and fabric.

Joann stood out for having the most extensive fabric selection compared to competitors like Michaels and Hobby Lobby. Customers valued the opportunity to physically feel and compare fabrics before purchasing. For last-minute project needs, Joann was often the go-to destination for quick fixes, making it a convenient option for designers and hobbyists.

The closures are particularly hard for fashion students, who relied on Joann for affordable and accessible materials. Luna Bonneau, a junior at Arizona State University studying fashion design, shared her disappointment.

"As a fashion major, I need supplies every week, and Joann was great for picking up items on short notice," Bonneau said.

Without Joann, students in cities like Phoenix, Arizona, where the ASU FIDM campus is, will struggle to find affordable options locally.

While the closures mark a loss for the community, there are some benefits for longtime customers. USA Today reported that Joann will have discounts in the weeks leading up to its closing, ranging from 20% to 75% off store merchandise. This temporary discount could help alleviate the loss, but the long-term effects on the designing community remain uncertain.

Joann's closure highlights the decline of fabric and craft stores, especially outside major metropolitan areas. Rising inflation and the shift to online shopping have led to the gradual disappearance of these stores. While some cities may struggle to find alternatives, others hope to see more independent retailers or new chains emerge to fill the void left by Joann's departure.
